Praying for a Godly Spouse

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:10-12

As our sons and daughters grow into adulthood, our ability to impact their choices begins to diminish.  We hope and pray that the things we taught them about God, about Scripture, about living a life that pleases the Lord, are deeply rooted.  But we no longer have the ability to steer them away from influences that may be negative or unproductive and we have little say in the friends they choose, especially if they’re living at a distance.  Parenting adult children is challenging.

When it comes to finding a spouse, there are challenges there, too.  Though we hope our son or daughter would choose to make their decision based on our discernment and approval, by the time the relationship reaches that point, our beloved child may have already made up their mind… our input is just a formality.  That’s hard to take, isn’t it?

But we’re not powerless! Not at all. We can make a huge impact on their life choices by talking to the Father and asking for His guidance, His intervention, and His protection. We can ask the He would give our son or daughter His best- better than we could choose or imagine!

So, how do we pray?  Many of us likely began praying when our children were just little ones, praying that God would be preparing a godly husband or wife for them.  Here’s the thing, don’t stop.  Don’t stop praying like that.  God will bring the right person at the right time, or make it clear He has a plan that asks our son or daughter to remain single.  We need to be okay with that.  We need to pray that our children would be okay with whatever God asks of them, too. Because isn’t that the best?

Here are some prayer points we can pray for both future husbands and future wives, and for our sons and daughters, all tied to Scripture.

  • Pray that they would be like Christ and that He would mold them and shape their heart and mind to be like Him. (Philippians 2:5;  Ephesians 4:14-15)

  • Ask the Lord to make their words (and heart) authentic, not just filled with knowledge, but seasoned with grace (I Corinthians 13:1; Colossians 4:6)

  • Pray they would exhibit patience and kindness (1 Corinthians 13:4)

  •  they would not be jealous or envious, but truly want the best for others and would celebrate when they have success or honor (1 Corinthians 13:4; Romans 12:15)

  • Ask God to help them value others before themselves (Philippians 2:3)

  • Pray that they would have a precise and correct knowledge of Scripture that would enable them to love others well (not to be puffed up with knowledge) and that they would be discerning in the teaching they listen to and the leaders they follow. (Philippians 1:9)

  • Pray that they would hide God’s word in their heart to keep them from sin (Psalm 119:11)

  • And pray that God’s word would be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (Psalm 119:105)

  • Pray God’s protection over them, so they would keep their way pure by living according to God’s word (Psalm 119:9)

  • Ask the Lord to keep them legalism and that He would help them truly understand God’s grace and the freedom He gives to trust Jesus alone for salvation (Ephesians 2:8; 2 Timothy 1:9).

  • Pray that they would not lean into the world’s standards or be pressured to compromise to be accepted, but that they would stand for God’s truth, unwaveringly. (Hebrews 10:23)

  • Ultimately, pray that God would cultivate two people who, together, would have a godly marriage that would reflect Christ and the Church, surrender and obedience, love and protection, selflessness and sacrifice no matter the circumstances, because their hope is in Jesus and not in the other person to whom they are married.

There are so many things we can pray to this end; this is just the start.  Add to the list as you pray and let the Holy Spirit guide your words and your petitions.  The words of Scripture are always powerful and effective, it is the most you can do. Let’s God’s word do the speaking for you.

And pray for both the ‘unknown’ future spouse and for your son or daughter, that God would prepare their hearts and cultivate in them the qualities that are important for a God-centered relationship to be developed in His time and His way.

If your son or daughter is already married, pray that God would grow them in these areas. Pray that He would build a strong, God-honoring marriage that would be a testimony of His grace and redemption.

Why not write out a prayer, and then, when the time is right, share it with the one for whom you’ve been praying.  What a precious gift that could be for the ‘other’, knowing that they’ve been prayed for and seeing the Scripture that’s been spoken over them, even before they were known to you.

Pray without ceasing!

Dear Children…Don’t Let Anyone Lead You Astray

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is  righteous, just as he is righteous.  The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

Have you ever been deceived?  It’s an awful realization, isn’t it?  When you believe and trust in someone or something, only to realize that what you believed to be true, thought you understood and wholeheartedly supported is not what it seemed.  It can throw you for a loop.  And watching someone go through it can be equally as difficult…especially when that other person doesn’t recognize the deception.

Deception is a slippery slope that pulls people further and further from the Truth and into false hope, misdirected loyalty, and often, victimization.  Deception leads to loss of resources, relationships, and hope.  It’s a ploy of the enemy to convince people to believe a lie, isolate them from one another and keep them from following Christ.

But how do you recognize deception?  How can you spot a ‘fake’?  Those who are trained to spot fake money and art look for certain characteristics and inconsistencies.  But in order to do so, they have to have intricate knowledge of the original before they are able to spot a fake.  Our sons and daughters need to have strong knowledge of Scripture and a consistent, growing relationship with the Lord in order to protect themselves from deception. Inch-deep knowledge and casual practice of spiritual disciplines leave us vulnerable to being led astray by teachers whose teaching “sounds similar” but whose doctrine weaves in error and deception.

The enemy will try to convince us that what we’re following is “okay” or “not really as bad as we might think”, or even label it as “my truth” so others cannot tell us it’s wrong. If he can do that, then he is accomplishing his goal of deception and disruption.   Lord have mercy!  Our sons and daughters need to be on guard!!

1 John 3:7-8 says, “Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.  The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

So, how do we recognize and avoid deception?  How do we remain faithful? We need to pray that our sons and daughters will:

  • Recognize God’s Truth:

    • Colossians 1:9-14 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

  • Be able to identify falsehood

    • Jude 1:17-19 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.”

    • 2 John 2:7, 9-11 “I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.  Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.

  • Avoid evil:

    • Proverbs 16:17 “The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives.”

    • I John 1:6 “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”

  • Fellowship with other believers who walk in the Truth:

    • Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

    • 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

  • Listen to the Holy Spirit Who lives in us- He will help us recognize those who walk with Christ in genuine fellowship vs. those who are ‘posers’.

    • 1 John 4:6 “We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

  • Strive to maintain a testimony that gives evidence of Christ in us- our life should speak truth and give evidence of Christ to others

    • 3 John 1:3 “ It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.”

Today, let’s pray these scriptures over our sons and daughters.  But let’s also pray for the Body of Believers.  Satan is strong, yes, but the God that lives in us is stronger and He holds the victory!!  Let’s pray He will surround us with His mighty protection and keep us walking faithfully.

Pray without ceasing.

And Now, Dear Children, Continue in Him

1 John 2:28-29 “And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.  If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

When He appears…. can you imagine? When Jesus appears, where will we be? Maybe the better question is, what will we be doing? Will He find us faithful?

Oh how we want our sons and daughters to walk faithfully with the Lord! That’s our heart’s cry, isn’t it? And when Jesus returns, we want to be confident that our sons and daughters would be unashamed at His coming, standing boldly for Christ, eager to be in His presence.

Today, let’s pray 1 John 2:28-29 over our sons and daughters and as we pray, let’s put their names into the scripture to personalize it.

“Heavenly Father, I pray that now, and always, (name), would continue in Christ, so that when he appears (name) may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. If (name), knows that he is righteous, they know and understand that everyone who does what is right has been born of him. I pray that (name) would live in such a way that others would see evidence of their new birth in Christ and a life that is committed to righteousness. I pray that (name) would walk with You faithfully, not compromising or wavering in their commitment to You and Your word. Help them stay the course and would walk carefully in Your path of righteousness. I pray that (name) would be eager for Jesus’ return and would be unashamed, ready to stand with Him in glory.  In Jesus’ name, amen.”

 Pray without ceasing.

Down the Garden Path

1 John 2:15-17  “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.  For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.  The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

What was the original sin, committed by Adam and Eve?  It was these, the lust of the flesh, the cravings of the body and senses, “Oh, that fruit looks sweet- I bet it tastes good, if I could just try it...take a bite, satisfy my craving….” It was the lust of the eyes and mind- the knowing better than, “And, really, I’m sure God didn’t mean what He said, right?  Think about it… why would He deny us something that He placed right here in the garden for us to enjoy?!  It only makes sense that we should be totally fine.  And, really, we’re smart, right?”  And the pride of life, not needing God because we know better… “We would be just like God, knowing good and evil, why, we would be even more compatible with Him- we deserve to be like Him!” Interestingly, Strong’s Concordance defines the pride of life as “an insolent and empty assurance, which trusts in its own power and resources and shamefully despises and violates divine laws and human rights, and an impious and empty presumption which trusts in the stability of earthly things” (1) Ah, knowing better than God…a surefire attitude that ruins any life.

It boils down to these: what we crave and desire, what we see with our eyes and think we know and understand in our minds and the prideful arrogance that tells us we are able to control our own destiny, we know better than God.  It’s a full and total rebellion against God and His rightful Lordship in our lives.  It’s the very trap with which Satan delights to ensnare us….since the beginning of time.

John is warning us of the lures and traps because not much has changed.  Sin is sin.  Yet, people still resist the warning, why?  (go back are re-read the previous two paragraphs).  We have a sinful heart that rebels against God.  The desires and cravings that lead us down that garden path are the very same that lured Adam and Eve, the first man and woman living in the perfect garden in the Presence of God, into abandoning their perfect relationship with God.

Oh that we could protect our sons and daughters from these traps!!  They lead to death.  They ensnare us in darkness.  They rob us of joy and purpose.  Today, let’s pray that our sons and daughters would cling to life in Christ and would avoid those sins that would damage their relationship with God.  Pray protection over and around them. Pray for discernment and a submissive spirit.

“Father, I pray that you would control the cravings of life.  Do not allow (name) to long for thing that are ungodly or sinful.  The lust of the flesh needs to die and the longing for the Spirit needs to be strong.  I pray that you would help (name) to hunger and thirst for righteousness, not for things that would satisfy their sensual desires.  Put a guard on (name)’s eyes.  Keep them from craving things that would not support their relationship with You.  Don’t let them see things that would distract them from You or that would put thoughts and desires in their mind that would war against Your will for them.  I pray that they would guard their eyes and thoughts so that what they fill them with are good and Godly, not dark and sinful.  Lord, I pray that (name) would be fully submitted to You, recognizing their deep need for Your lordship in their life.  Let them daily surrender to You so that You are Who they trust in, and not themselves.  Let them lay their will aside to follow after You with their whole heart, their whole mind and with all their being.  I pray that they would seek to do Your will and bring You glory in everything.  In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Pray without ceasing.

Encouraging Faithfulness

Acts 11:23 (19-24)  “Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.”

Faithfulness to the gospel demonstrates God’s presence in our lives.  Notice, in Acts, the persecution of the church brought a fervent sharing of the gospel and a boldness to speak about Christ to those who desperately needed to hear the good news.  The gospel of Jesus Christ is life-changing!

Antioch was a city in ancient Syria.  Today,  it’s now a part of south central Turkey, just east of Aleppo, Syria.  When Barnabas arrived in Antioch, the Presence of God was evident among the people there.  He “saw what the grace of God had done”.

If we are praying for faithfulness for our sons and daughters, we need to pray that God’s Presence is evident in their lives.  Christianity can’t just be a label, it needs to define us and everything we say and do give evidence that we are Christ-followers.  Can others see evidence of the grace of God in our lives?

Barnabas was so moved that he “encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts”  We need to be the Barnabas to our sons and daughters, friends!!  When he “encouraged’ them. Strong’s Concordance (1) defines “encourage”  as :admonish, exhort, beseech, console, comfort, strengthen and teach.  Friends, that’s a lot of verbs right there!!  If we want to encourage faithfulness, friends, we need to give our sons and daughters more than an ‘atta boy!’.

Yes, we’re praying for their faithfulness, but let’s dig in and be intentional!!  The days are becoming darker- we can’t ignore it.  Will our sons and daughters cling to the faithfulness needed to preserve their faith?  Will they be persuaded, beyond a doubt, that Jesus is their Lord and Savior?  Oh, friends, we need to encourage their faithfulness, admonish them to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Eph. 6:10), exhort them to walk in the light of His presence (Ps. 89:15), beseech them to love the Lord their God (Mt 22:37) console them with the truth that God provides mercy and grace in time of need (Heb. 4:16), comfort them with the reminder that God is a God of comfort and compassion in our troubles, our comfort abounds in Christ (2 Cor. 1:3-5), remind them that they will be strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that they may have great endurance and patience, (Col. 1:11) and pray that the cry of their heart is Psalm 119:33, “Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end”  That, friends, is praying for faithfulness for our sons and daughters.

Today, we need to pray through all of the aspects of encouraging faithfulness in our sons and daughters, and then let’s write a note for ourselves to remind us of the many ways we can encourage them. Faithfulness is a long, steady commitment, let’s bear with them in prayer!

Pray without ceasing.

A Call to Faithfulness

2 Timothy 1:7-9

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.  So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.  He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,  but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

This week we’re taking a deeper dive into praying for faithfulness for our sons and daughters.  We want to be specific and targeted as we pray.

What is faith?  Faith, according to Strong’s Concordance (1), is defined as the persuasion or conviction of the truth of something. In the case of the believer, it is the conviction that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only means of forgiveness of sin and salvation of our souls.  It is the conviction that we are sinners, saved by grace, dependent on the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sin and the conquering of death through His resurrection and ascension.  Faithfulness, then, is holding fast to that conviction, continuing unwaveringly in a life that reflects that conviction and a full dependence on the grace of God received through the gospel.  Faithfulness is not just a ‘knowing’, but living out an unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ.

2 Timothy reminds us that we, as believers, were called by God before the beginning of time.  Before God created the world, before the fall of man, God knew who his children would be.  He knew; and He called us into fellowship with Him.

1 Corinthians 1:9 says “God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God doesn’t call us only to watch us struggle and flounder to follow Him.  He is faithful to support, protect, encourage and equip us.

Today, we want to pray that our sons and daughters understand their calling and realize it is not just a ‘label’ but that it requires action to ‘guard the good deposit’ and that they ‘keep the pattern of sound teaching’.

We must pray that they hold fast to the truth of the gospel and that they don’t just have ‘head knowledge’ but that they are intentional to live faithfully so their life reflects their calling by the Lord to a life surrendered to Him.

Pray that they rely on the Lord for strength, protection and equipping in faithfulness so they are purposeful and directed in their walk with the Lord.

Pray without ceasing.

Mercy, Delivered in Faithfulness and Righteousness

Psalm 143:1-2 A psalm of David. LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief. Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.

If any of us has a son or daughter who is not a believer, God’s mercy is likely the plea of our heart.  If we have a prodigal, God’s mercy is what we plead to bring them back to the family and back to the cross.  When we are watching our children make unwise and ungodly decisions, our hearts ache for God’s mercy in their lives and their recognition of what His mercy offers them.

David, in Psalm 143, cries out to God for mercy, appealing to His faithfulness and righteousness for deliverance.  Why is that?  It’s important to understand God’s attribtes and what they mean for us.

He IS faithful:

Firmness, steadiness, security (1)

   Established & trustworthy (2)

To support, be established, stand firm. (3)

When we cry out to God, we can be confident that He is steady, strong and secure.  He is trustworthy- He will always provide what is appropriate and necessary. He will not deceive and He will not do a ‘bait and switch’ on us.  His support is firm and reliable and is always what we need in every situation. When we cry out, His response is faithful.

And He is righteous:

Justice and righteousness in rule, morally and as an attribute of God (4)

To be just, have a just cause, to do or bring justice, vindicate (5)

God is the standard of righteousness.  When we appeal to Him, we know we are calling out to the Source of Truth and the model for all that is right.

Think about those attributes.  Our God, alone, is faithful.  His nature is the example of faithfulness, reliable in and out of season.  Everything points back to Him alone.  He is steady, secure and trustworthy.  He is righteous.  He alone determines what is right and true. Truth is not relative to a situation or an individual. Truth does not change, depending on circumstances.  God alone embodies moral rightness and determines and makes us righteous through His blood.

When we pray for our sons and daughters, do we stop and appeal to the perfect attributes of our God, resting and believing confidently in Who He is and what He is able to do, or do we simply list out our needs?

Do we ponder from what aspects of God’s character those answers come?  Mindful prayer.  It can change our perspective and deepen our awe and fear of God.

What is it that you long for as you pray for your sons and daughters today?  Rescue?  Protection?  Blessing and favor?  Any of the answers that God gives us emanate from His character and nature.

David appealed to God’s faithfulness and righteousness when He cried out for mercy, forgiveness and relief. Today, let’s appeal to God’s faithfulness and righteousness as we pray for the burdens we carry.  Trust that in His perfect character, He will answer completely and perfectly in His time.  Trust that He is faithful and righteous.

“Lord, today I cry out for mercy on (name)’s behalf.  You know where they are and what they are doing.  You know, better than I do, what they need and long for.  Lord, you know where their heart is.  I pray that they would be aligned with and committed to You.  Lord, don’t allow them to compromise or be pulled away by temptation.  Help them stand firm in their faith.  Have mercy, Lord, to ensure (name) walks faithfully with You.  Father, you understand a parent’s heart.  I plead with You today that you would protect and preserve (name) so they would stand with you in glory as one of Your own.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

The Lord Loves Justice

Psalm 33:5 “The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.”

Look around.  Watch the news.  This world is a mess.  If we’re honest, we worry about our sons and daughters- what will it mean for them?  We worry about their children, what kind of world will they live in?  If we dwell on it, our own anxiety can spiral out of control.  We risk losing sight of Who is in control.

So how do we calm our own hearts and point our sons and daughters to Jesus when they get discouraged about life and the circumstances of this world?

Psalm 33:5 is a sweet nugget of truth that can help us refocus.   “The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.”  If we still and quiet our hearts and look around us, we can see God’s unfailing love at work.  Ponder these scriptures:

Psalm 113:3 “From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised.”

Isaiah 40:28 “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”

Psalm 95:3-5  “For the LORD is a great God And a great King above all gods, in whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for it was He who made it, and His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.”

Proverbs 3:19-20  “By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.”

All of creation knows the Lord is God.  All of creation dares not question His sovereignty.  Creation bows to the Lord in reverence and obedience.  Can we do the same?

The Lord laid the foundations of this world and He will bring everything into submission under His lordship.  He loves righteousness.  He will ensure justice.  We can rest in the knowledge that He is Creator and Sustainer.  He will bring all of creation into submission under His rule and reign.

“Lord, I pray today that you would calm our hearts.  Help us to focus on Your righteousness.  Reassure us that You will indeed bring justice.  When our world is spinning out of control, help us to stop and ponder all that You do each day to show us your unfailing love.  We know you love righteousness and it grieves Your heart to see such evil and disregard for life and for Your Authority.  We know you desire justice and one day you will bring it.  Help us to refocus on the reminders You give us each day that testify to Your Sovereignty.  Give us opportunities to encourage our sons and daughters to follow after You.  Help us Lord, to not lose sight of the knowledge that You have a plan and You will work out every detail.  Even when things seem dark, You are still the Light of the world.  Help us to walk in Your light each day.  In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Pray without ceasing.

Saturday Prayer Review

Don’t stop praying!! Even when we don’t see progress, God is working! Even when we can’t understand what He’s doing, He’s got a plan!! Trust. Pray. Believe.

Take time to name your worries and lay them before the Lord.  Remind yourself of God’s faithfulness and that He is the Creator who commands the wind and the waves.  He can calm the storm in our hearts and minds.  Meditate on the Lord’s faithfulness, strength and protection.  Trust Him with your precious ones and pray for them by name.

Pray for that our sons and daughters would walk faithfully with the Lord.  Pray for those who are wandering off or running away.  He knows what path they will take and, like a watercourse, He can and will direct it.  Remember, sometimes He allows us to follow our rebellion, but He’s still in control.  We need to trust Him and pray for softened hearts and ears that hear, eyes that see spiritual truth and minds that understand.

Thank the Lord for all of the times He’s shown His faithfulness to you and to your family.  Recount the ‘Stones of Remembrance’ that will serve as reminders for future generations.

Pray Lamentations 3:22-23 for our sons and daughters today. “The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.”

Now, pray Psalm 33:4 “For the Word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness.”  Thank the Lord for His faithfulness and ask Him to continue working in the hearts of your sons and daughters.

Pray without ceasing, friends.  God is faithful!

Daily, Abundant Faithfulness

“The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23

“For the Word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness.” Psalm 33:4

“Tomorrow is another day”  “Things will look better in the morning”  “One day at a time” These are all good reminders that hint at something of more substance, something that is coming that should encourage us.  But as believers, Lamentations 3:22-23 are the ‘golden nugget’ verses that we should carry with us.  God’s lovingkindness never ceases- never!!  And...it’s new and fresh every morning!!  His compassions NEVER fail and his faithfulness is great. Wow!! (Someone should put that on a poster! ;-))

Friends, how do we encourage our sons  and daughters?  Do we just tell them ‘things will look better in the morning’ or do we go all-out and give them Lamentations 3:22-23?  What would WE find most encouraging?

When our sons and daughters say “I messed up today”  “Today was awful”  “I can’t wait until this week is done” - it’s a perfect opportunity to encourage them with those promises from Lamentations.

But, when things are difficult for a prolonged time, what then?  Friends, this is when we talk to our sons and daughters like the adults they are.  This life was not meant to be ‘all the things’.  We live in a fallen world and what God intended for us was corrupted by sin.  Yes, there will be pain and suffering.  Yes, we will face disappointment, betrayal and injustice.  But ALL of God’s work is done in faithfulness.  His work in our lives is to make us more like Christ- a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3)  If we lived our best life here, would we long for Heaven?  If everything was pleasant all the time, would we realize our need for God?  Oh, ALL his work is done in faithfulness.  We need to trust Him.  His mercy is new everyday and is always enough for what we will face while we walk with Him.  Today, encourage your sons and daughters with these scriptures.

“Lord, thank You for the promises You give us in Your word that assure us of Your faithfulness and strength for each day.  I pray that You would work in (name)’s heart and mind today to encourage them.  Give them Your assurance.  Help them to see that You are always faithful and You have purpose in each and everything they might face.  Give them strength to keep walking with You.  Feed their soul today with Your Word.  Bring others alongside to encourage them.  I pray that they would personally know your new mercy today and would draw on that to sustain them.  Don’t let them try and ‘conserve’ or hoard it… it’s new every day, let them lean on it fully.  Let them drink eagerly from Your well of living water and know with confidence it will never run dry.  Lord, sustain them today, I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.”

Pray without ceasing.

Faithful Through the Generations

Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God  who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,”

Often when we gather as families, we reminisce about significant events, fun times, funny things that happened to us.  We laugh and recall with joy those things that stand out in our memories.  But do we take time to recount the ways God has been good to us?  Do we really share the miraculous and mundane ways God made Himself known?

Friends, if we are believers, we are building a legacy of faith for our children, grandchildren and generations yet to come, if the Lord tarries.  It’s hard to imagine next week, but a thousand generations?  Yet, this is what God promises!!  It’s likely very few people in history thought their story would have significance, yet, how beautiful is it to read stories of those who lived faithfully for the Lord?  What about the stories of those who left all they knew to carry the gospel to another land and people?  They were doing what God called them to- yet we learn so much about His faithfulness in the midst of their daily obedience.  What is it that we want our children, grandchildren and future generations to know about God’s faithfulness to us?

Let’s be bold and share those stories of God’s faithfulness.  Write them down.  Share them with your family.  Record them where they can be heard.  Someone, someday, will read or hear them and be encouraged.  They will become the treasured stories that evidence God’s goodness and faithfulness to your family through the generations.  What accounts of God’s faithfulness can you recall today?

Today, take some time to write out the accounts of God’s faithfulness to you...then share it with your sons and daughters.  It may feel awkward at first, but go on and do it.  The more you testify, the more excited and appreciative you will be of God’s faithfulness and the more you will come to love Him.  Create those ‘Stones of Remembrance’ so that when future generations ask “What is that?” You can beautifully testify to God’s loving faithfulness to you...and to them!

Faithful, Despite Our Choices

2 Timothy 2:13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”

Sometimes our hearts ache to see the path our children choose.  Oh, as a child they loved Jesus, so very much.  They were excited to go to church.  They sang songs with their whole heart; and the joy they had in knowing the Lord was contagious.  Their passion and energy inspired us!

But along the way, something changed.  They grew indifferent, or even cold.  They bristle at the mention of His name.  They are arrogant and confident that they don’t need the Lord.

Friend, is your heart aching this morning?

Jesus sees and He knows.  His word does not return void.  Even the hardest hard isn’t impenetrable by the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.  If our sons and daughters made a commitment to the Lord, He will not disown them.  ! Corinthians 6:17 says “But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.”  He will remain faithful.  He cannot deny Himself.

We only see what is ‘right now’.  We can’t see the future.  But we can pray and trust, because God is already there.  He exists outside time and He is the Master of all things, time included.  He knows what path our son or daughter will take and like a watercourse, He can and will direct it.  Sometimes He allows us to follow our rebellion, but He’s still in control.  We need to trust Him and pray for softened hearts and ears that hear, eyes that see spiritual truth and minds that understand and discern wisely..

It’s not too late, really, it’s not.  Keep trusting and resting in the sovereignty, power and faithfulness of God.

“Lord, You know the burden in my heart for (name).  I pray that even today, Holy Spirit, You would move and work in them.  Open their eyes to see the rebellion they have puts them on a spiritual trajectory to a dead end. Bring them back to the joy and passion they had for You when they were a child.  I pray that even as they sleep, the verses they memorized would flow through them and ignite a hunger and thirst for righteousness.  As they go through their day, bring those beautiful scripture songs to mind to renew their first love.  Thank you for Your faithfulness Lord.  I pray that even today, You would bless us with a glimmer of change, a softening of (name)s heart and a step toward repentance and restoration in Jesus.  It’s in His name I pray, Amen.”

Pray without ceasing. God is faithful.

Faithful Protector

2 Thessalonians 3:3  “The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”

Be honest, sometimes as parents we get anxious.  We worry about our sons and daughters, where are they?  What are they doing and who are they with?  Are they making good choices?  Then we worry over their safety, are they taking risks?  Are they safe on the road?  If our brains kick into overdrive we can have them  off the side of the road, in a ditch, alone...in the dark in just a matter of seconds.  Then we can’t sleep; we worry, we stress and, Oh!  Our minds can carry us farther and faster than a NASA rocket.  Just one suggestion (or news story)  can start our minds spinning and our stomachs churning.

Friends, the Lord is faithful.  He’s faithful!  He will always be steady, reliable, protective and loving.  He’s 100% all the time.  We can always rely on Him.

Not only is He faithful, He will establish us.  What does that mean? Strong’s Concordance defines ‘establish’ as: to set fast, i.e. (literally) to turn resolutely in a certain direction, or (figuratively) to confirm:—fix, (e-)stablish, steadfastly set, strengthen. (1)

HE will establish our sons and daughters.  If they are following Him, He will ensure they are set in the right direction and He will strengthen them.  Can we trust Him to do what He says?  Of course!  Will we, though?  We need to check our hearts on this.

Then, He will guard us from the evil one.  Not ‘He might’ or ‘He could’ but HE WILL.  He will guard us.

Why not take our worry-energy and pour it into prayer?  Rather than dwelling on the ‘what-if’s’ we should meditate on the ‘what IS’ and the ‘Who’ that commands the wind and the waves.  He can calm the storm in our hearts and minds.  Meditate on the Lord’s faithfulness, strength and protection.  Trust Him with your precious ones.

“Father, today I pray for your faithful care and protection over (name).  Help me to trust You and not slip into having an anxious heart and mind.  I know You are faithful, always.  I know you are stronger than anything (name) might face today.  I know you are able to keep them from the evil one.  I pray that You would do each of these today.  Lord, guard my own heart and mind in Christ Jesus and let me be an example to (name) of trusting in You and resting in You in every circumstance.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Pray without ceasing.
